Even the most well-organized physician practices can find themselves facing payor audits, downcoding, prepayment review, or requests for repayment based on coding analytics and statistical extrapolation methodologies that can create significant financial exposure. Independent and small-group practices are especially vulnerable because they may lack dedicated compliance and audit defense resources.

- Understand the types of payor reviews: Special Investigations Unit audit, prepayment review, Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor Medicare Administrative Contractor activity, and DOJ involvement.
- Respond appropriately when an AI self-audit (or a payor letter) flags something.
- Evaluate whether a flagged issue requires education, corrective action, refund analysis or escalation to legal counsel.
- Identify weaknesses in payor methodologies and automated review systems.
- Develop an effective post-audit response strategy focused on documentation review, provider education and ongoing monitoring.
The webinar will also walk participants through how to interpret payor audit letters, assess the validity of findings before accepting them, and determine when issues can be handled internally or when expert assistance is needed.
Presenter:
Frank Cohen is Senior Data Scientist at VMG Health and Chief Statistician at Advanced Healthcare Analytics, LLC. As a computational statistician, he has spent nearly five decades at the intersection of healthcare data science, clinical analytics, and Medicare audit defense, providing expert witness testimony in over one hundred healthcare litigation matters involving statistical sampling, extrapolation methodology, and coding-pattern analysis. He is the original developer of the Compliance Risk Analyzer (CRA) platform, holds Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt certifications, and is the author of multiple books on healthcare analytics and physician compliance.
