Featured Presenter: Shari Covington, CMA Legal Counsel

Ms. Covington is a health care attorney for the California Medical Association (CMA) Center for Legal Affairs. She is a graduate of the University at Albany State University of New York with a Bachelor of Arts in English and received her J.D. from Franklin Pierce Law Center in New Hampshire.

Ms. Covington worked for a boutique firm in the Bay Area representing solely physicians in medical board matters, employment contract review drafting and negotiations, separation agreements, labor and employment issues such as performance improvement plans negotiations and EEOC filings, peer review defense, National Practitioner Data Bank rebuttals, large scale medical billing appeals against insurance companies, medical practice establishment, the reorganization of medical practices, as well as the sale of medical practices. Additionally, Ms. Covington was a medical biller and coder for almost 20 years prior to becoming an attorney where she managed billing practices for large and small private physician medical practices.

Ms. Covington’s work at CMA has spanned protecting California physicians in courts through amicus briefs, editing and authoring chapters in the California Physician’s Legal Handbook, listening to and advising on medical staff concerns, and much more.
